Sport Pilot
Why would you consider light sport over the normal private pilot certificate? That’s a great question. The training for the Sport Pilot Certificate is very similar to the Private Pilot certificate. Difference being mostly that the sport pilot does not cover some of the areas that are in Private pilot.
Sport pilot has been around since 2004. Most pilots are private pilots for a few reasons:
It was the beginning level (above Student) pilot’s license for decades.
Most pilots have never heard of light sport or Sport Pilot. They want to become commercial pilots. But light sport offers a ton of advantages for people who want to just enjoy aviation and maybe share it with their friends. Below are some of the great reasons you should consider light sport:
Training requirements are less than private, leading to a much lower entry cost into aviation. You get all the same stick and rudder skills that a private pilot is taught.
You can customize your training to your goals.
There are tons of add on endorsements that can get to further your training and abilities.
If you become a sport pilot and eventually want to upgrade to a private pilot, all your training and time cross directly over.
If you think that getting an FAA medical exam is not for you, you can still fly light sport: your driver’s license counts as your “medical” for light sport!
Many antique and vintage aircraft count as light sport.
Tons of experimental and home built aircraft are light sport. Overall light sport is the least expensive yet very enjoyable way to take to the skies.
As an added huge bonus, the FAA had released the MOSAIC rules, and we can help you understand them. This is a huge game changer and will make sport aviation so much more useful. This is a GREAT time to be getting into light sport!
